Kearny High Educational Complex Design and Innovation Classroom

San Diego, CA

A sustainable Career Technical Education (CTE) space for students interested in pursuing architecture and engineering careers, positioning Kearny High School with a competitive edge.

The project consists of a single large classroom flexible enough to accommodate traditional classroom learning, computer technology, 3D printing and laser cutting, and indoor and outdoor construction projects. This was achieved with ample power supply in floor boxes spread throughout the interior and on all exterior construction canopy columns.

SGPA selected polished concrete floor for durability, and a large garage door to move projects and materials from the indoor classroom to the outdoor covered construction patio. The design features a steel moment frame pulled out of the walls so students can study the structure and be inspired by creative architectural design. SGPA met with site users, teachers, and students to understand how they use the current facilities, including the needs of new technology in today’s classroom. This project was approved by the DSA and is funded by Propositions S, Z, and the CTE State Grant funding.
