The Price Center optimizes space by converting the existing building from single-tenant use to multi-tenant use.
The UC San Diego Bookstore previously occupied all three levels. At the conclusion of this project, the space consolidated and occupied the first-floor, with a retailer occupying the second-floor, and UC San Diego departments occupying the third-floor.
Major scope of work included retrofitting the existing MEP systems to accommodate separate tenants on each floor, exterior path of travel and restroom accessibility upgrades, demolition of the first-floor central stair and structural infill/support of the overhead slab opening, and a new accessible elevator lobby on the first-floor to the existing elevator and stair core on the south side of the building. Unique challenges included working on in occupied building with logistical concerns to move the bookstore from the first-floor to the second-floor, then back down to the first floor after the remodel while keeping the bookstore operational without service disruption. SGPA met a very difficult deadline for the first phase of work, which was remodeling the first-floor bookstore during the summer, to be able to re-open when students returned in August.
