Design and construction administration for a HCAI-3 three-story addition and tenant improvement of an existing, two-story National Historic Register building.
Project programming, design, and documentation were completed for the renovation of and three-story addition to an existing 12,000 SF National Historic Landmark facility into a 19,000 SF safety net clinic. Extensive neighborhood and agency involvement were undertaken to secure project entitlements.
The project meets LEED Silver criteria and repurposes a historic building with a sensitive design approach, maintaining both interior and exterior character. Inside, it houses 27 exam rooms, a triage area, and mental health offices, while also incorporating an exercise and instructional room for prenatal group education and a nutritional instruction kitchen. Operating as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), it adheres to County of Alameda Green Building Guidelines for design and construction. The construction strategy was phased, with careful transition planning and swing space management, which included the design and coordination of a modular clinic to ensure uninterrupted operations during construction.
